Best carpet for stairs — the fitter's honest guide

Stairs are the single hardest test any carpet faces — every fibre gets twisted, ground and abraded thousands of times a year. Get the wrong spec and you'll see bald patches on the nosings within 18 months. Get it right and you'll forget it's there for a decade.

Pile type: twist wins

For stairs, specify a heavy-domestic twist pile — ideally 40oz or heavier. Twist yarns resist crushing on the nosings far better than cut-pile. Loop carpets look great but can snag on pet claws and unravel — avoid on stairs where pets pass.

Fibre: 80/20 wool blend if budget allows

80% wool / 20% polyamide is the gold standard — wool for resilience and appearance retention, polyamide for tensile strength. Pure polypropylene is fine and stain-tough but flattens faster on treads. Solution-dyed nylon is the commercial-spec option that outlasts most homeowners' patience.

Weight and density

Ignore the marketing weight — ask for the pile weight per m² (oz or g). 40oz+ pile weight for a busy family staircase is the fitter's baseline. Below that, expect visible tread wear inside 3 years.

Underlay: 10mm PU, no compromise

Stair underlay works the hardest of anywhere in the house. Fit a 10mm PU foam underlay (Cloud 9, Tredaire Softwalk or equivalent) — never crumb rubber, which crushes on nosings. Cheap thin underlay is why so many stair carpets go bald early.

Fitting: waterfall vs cap-and-band

Waterfall is faster and cheaper; cap-and-band (capping) hugs the nosing tighter, wears better, and looks more premium. On any spend above £30/m², spec cap-and-band.

Frequently asked

Can I use the same carpet upstairs and downstairs?

Yes, and it's the neatest look — just make sure it's heavy-domestic rated. A living-room-only spec will fail on stairs.

How long should a stair carpet last?

8-12 years for an 80/20 wool blend on a family staircase, 5-8 years for polypropylene twist.

What about stair runners?

Runners on painted or stained treads look stunning but need edge-binding and a skilled fitter — factor an extra £150-£300 for the binding on a full flight.
